      林語堂在《生活的藝術》裡有一篇《論靈心》的文章，談到人類靈心的沿進過程。他說﹕「當頭腦每次和其他有關的知覺器官脫離聯繫，從事所謂『抽象的思維』時，當每次離開極姆斯（W. James）所謂知覺的現實（Perceptual reality）而逃進意念的現實世界（The world of conceptual reality）時，它的活力消滅了，人性也消失了，也退化了。」如果他活在今天，我不知他對當前的虛擬的現實（Virtual reality）會怎麼說。

      根據卡內基?美隆大學（Carnegie Mellon University）一項對匹茲堡地區四個學校及社區選出的169名參與者長達兩年的的調查研究，發現即使每星期只花幾個鐘頭在電腦網絡上，他們所經受到的消沉感與孤獨感，也比那些不上網的人要來得高。網絡的應用顯然對心理健康產生了負面的作用。

      這結果恰恰同一般的預期相反。它似乎指出，這互動的新玩意兒（如電子郵件及網上聊天），也許並不比那些『被動』的舊式大眾媒介（如觀看錄影帶）在社交方面健康多少。參與者報告，他們同家人的接觸以及朋友交往圈的減少，同他們花在網絡上的時間有直接的關係。

      根據這些資料，研究者推論，遠程關係無法像那些面對面的接觸一樣，為人們提供一種支持及相互作用的力量。而這種力量正是促成心理安全及快樂的因素。許多時候，在網絡上所建立的膚淺關係，反而會導致或增強人際間的疏離感。

      我自己便有這麼一兩次，半夜裡睡不著覺，爬起來上網絡逛聊天室（chatroom）的經驗。每次室內總有那麼七、八個人在那裡有一句沒一句地搭訕，說些呵欠連天無聊透頂的話。我待不了幾分鐘便趕緊離開，臨走時真想拋下一句﹕「你們為什麼不都上床去好好睡場大覺呢？」

      虛擬的現實再逼真，也不可能變成真實。我常想，這世上能真正讓我們留戀的，恐怕只有那使我們身心舒暢的習習清風、和煦的陽光、以及堅實的土地，這些我們的感官能觸能摸能感的東西。金錢、成就與名位，有當然很好，但畢竟不是能讓我們確知我們還好好活著的直接證據。

      最近受到全球許多地區的經濟惡化的影響，美國的股票市場也跟著大幅波動。這使我想起一九八七年的美國股市狂瀉。那時候我們正在夏威夷參加一個學術會議，消息傳來，引起了許多在那裡度假的遊客們的震撼。我曾寫了一首題為『土生土長的土褐色』的詩以誌其事﹕

差點被數字脹死的

終于狂瀉不止

使遠在威奇奇沙灘上

I told the truth. “I did it.” I said no more. It was hard enough saying what I had.
“I know how you like birds,” she said as she stood looking down at my guilt-ridden face. “Here is that field guide about birds that you are constantly checking out. It is yours. It’s time we got a new one for the school anyway. The book is yours and you will not be punished as long as you remember that I am not rewarding you for your misdeed, I am rewarding you for your truthfulness.”
I wore out that book trying to match the live, flying birds to their depictions in that field guide. The book is gone, so is my wonderful teacher. All that remains of that day is my memory and the lesson my teacher taught me. That lesson stays with me every day and it will echo forever.
